Visually Impaired Student Clarence Nayve Graduates Magna Cum Laude at Bicol University

A visually impaired student from Albay proved that determination, hard work, and a strong support system can overcome even the biggest challenges after graduating Magna Cum Laude from Bicol University.

Clarence Nayve, who was born with congenital glaucoma, completed his Bachelor of Arts in Literature despite completely losing his vision when he was in Grade 9.

His inspiring journey serves as a reminder that disability should never stop anyone from pursuing their dreams.

Who is Clarence Nayve?

Clarence Nayve is a resident of Pio Duran, Albay who was born with congenital glaucoma, a rare eye condition that causes increased pressure in the eyes and may lead to severe vision loss or blindness.

According to his mother, Clarence showed curiosity and determination even as a child. His love for learning continued throughout his education despite the gradual loss of his eyesight.

Although he struggled with his condition, Clarence remained focused on his studies and eventually graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bicol University.

Challenges During His Education

Clarence shared that studying became more difficult as his eyesight gradually worsened.

While he was still in elementary school, he would move closer to the blackboard just to read the lessons. His classmates and teachers also helped him by reading exam questions and classroom discussions.

By the time he reached Grade 9, he had completely lost his vision.

Despite the challenges, Clarence refused to give up on his dream of finishing college.

Support from Family, Friends, and Teachers

Clarence credited his achievement not only to his own perseverance but also to the people who supported him throughout his journey.

His parents continued to encourage him despite their financial struggles. His mother accompanied him to school during his first year of face-to-face classes in college before he eventually stayed in a boarding house near the university.

His classmates and friends also assisted him by guiding him around campus and helping him whenever needed.

Meanwhile, his professors allowed reasonable accommodations, including giving him additional time during examinations and allowing him to use accessibility applications on his mobile phone.

Technology Helped Him Continue His Studies

To complete his school requirements, Clarence used the Google Accessibility Suite, which helped him read learning materials, type documents, and answer examinations independently.

With the help of assistive technology and support from the people around him, he successfully completed his degree.

A Message on Inclusivity

Clarence said he is grateful that many people admire his achievement, but he hopes society will move beyond sympathy and instead promote genuine inclusivity.

According to him, people with disabilities do not simply need empathy—they need equal opportunities, understanding, and proper consideration.

He also reminded everyone that a person’s disability should not define what they are capable of achieving.

“Your disability should not define who you are or what you can be,” Clarence said.

His story continues to inspire many Filipinos, showing that determination, family support, and inclusive communities can help students overcome even the most difficult obstacles.
