The New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship covers tuition and required fees for New Mexico residents pursuing a training certificate, Associate Degree, or Bachelors Degree at a public college or university in New Mexico.

Beginning with the 2022-2023 academic year, the Opportunity Scholarship will be awarded during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.

The Opportunity Scholarship will pay up to 100% of tuition and required fees, as well as up to $50 per credit hour for course-specific fees. The Opportunity Scholarship does not require an application. A Scholarship team will work with you to award the scholarship if you meet the eligibility criteria.

For 2022-2023 Fast track program CNM Online College, and the Law Enforcement Academy will be covered at a cost of $126.00 per credit hour. The Electroneurodiagnostic Technology program will be covered at a rate of $171.00 per credit hour.

To Get Eligible, Students must have:

  • At the time of enrollment, you must be 18 years old or older (or eligible for the NM Lottery Scholarship).
  • Be a New Mexico resident.
  • You must have a high school diploma, GED, or a high school equivalency credential.
  • Enrollment in the Fall and Spring terms consecutively. Summer school is optional.
  • Enroll in 12 credit hours but no more than 18 credit hours for the Fall and Spring semesters for recent graduate students.
  • Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or another form of income verification.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 beginning with the first semester of receiving the scholarship.
  • Do not attempt more than 90 credit hours for an Associate Degree.
  • The scholarship will cover up to 90 credit hours for an associate degree and 160 credit hours for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Students with an Associate or Bachelor’s Degree are not eligible to attend CNM.
  • Non-credit program are not accepted.
  • Students are encouraged, but not required, to fill out the FAFSA.
  • Maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • We are currently reviewing students who had a GPA of less than 2.5 prior to Fall 2022.
  • Consecutive enrollment is maintained
  • Enrollment in the Fall and Spring terms consecutively. 
  • Summer school is optional.
  • Meets the criteria for earned credit hours

The Scholarship Duration

  • Scholarships may be extended for up to 90 attempted credit hours or the completion of an Associate Degree for an eligible student.
  • After earning an Associate Degree, a student is no longer eligible for CNM and can pursue a Bachelor’s Degree at a university.
  • Enroll in a credit-bearing 2-year program full-time (at least 12 credit hours and no more than 18 credit hours for fall and spring semesters) for recent graduate learners.

Probationary Status

If you are unable to meet the Opportunity Scholarship requirements due to an exceptional mitigating circumstance beyond your control, you may apply for probationary status. Fill out the Request for Probationary Status form and attach the necessary documentation before submitting it to Scholarship Services for review.

  • A review process is allowed for exceptional circumstances on a per semester basis. A leave of absence at a higher education institution can be renewed yearly.
  • After losing eligibility and exhausting an allowable probation period, the scholarship may be renewed for another two years.
  • If a probationary appeal is denied, a petition for reinstatement of Opportunity may be filed no sooner than two years after the end of the semester in which eligibility was lost.
